An account of sailing ships on the North American Pacific. |
|
Deals with sailing ships built on the Pacific Coast of Canada and the United States from the first British Columbian Schooner in 1788 explaining how sailing ships brough most of the settlers to the Pacific especially durin g the California Gold Rush and most of the freight before the transcontinental railway via Cape Horn. The book describes the development from early two masted schooners, with brigantines, barquentines a few barques but only one ship rigged vessel. Many ships had Bermuda rigged sails of their aftermost mast, as they saved labour; a practice found on modern vessels such as the STA schooners and Zygmund Chorens barquentines. The building came to an end around 1910 but was followed by a new wave in the First World War. The book explains how shipping shortages developed as owners moved their vessels from war zones and steel shortages resulted in builders reverting to wooden ships. The war boom came to an end in 1920 and many of the new vessels had short lives being built of unseasoned timber. The authors explains that many were laid up during the recession but some lasted until the late 1940s. The appendix contains a list of vessels over 100 tons built between 1850 and 1908 and another of vessels over 100 tons built between 1909 and 1921. There are numerous photographs showing barquentines, brigantines and schooners at the height of their development with four and five masted barquentines and five and even some six masted topsail schooners
